Artists Without a Cause

Artists Without a Cause (AWAC) creates a symbiotic relationship between artists working in the political and social field with organizations and activists who are championing a cause.

Mission
To connect artists working in a contextual manner with the organizations and activists who are building the knowledge bases essential for their production and expansion of their work.

Description
AWAC connects organizations and activists who are interested in engaging with audiences and participants using new, diverse and creative methods with artists who create socially and politically engaged artwork. We connect artists working in a contextual manner with the organizations and activists who are building the knowledge bases essential for their production and expansion of their work.

In order to better serve the aims of the organizations, artists and activists we will serve, AWAC is broken down initially into 3 parts, a Knowledge Bank, an Artistic Think Tank and a Matchmaking Service.

The Knowledge Bank researches collaborations between artists and organizations, compile collections of actions that have taken place, as well as artists working on social and political matters. The Knowledge Bank is a source for researchers, artists and organizations to find information about the inner workings behind various projects and also learn how to better work with each other to achieve their goals. Eventually, we will conduct a surveys of organizers and artists to find and address the potential concerns of these collaborations and understand the differences with artistic political work in a regionally, culturally and issue oriented context.

The Artistic Think Tank, created out of rotating team of art practitioners, work with organizers in developing concepts and tactics in order to meet their specific goals. Organizations have the opportunity to receive assistance with specific goals, tools to help strategize tactics, as well as receive help with engaging artists with their causes. We work with organizations to integrate artists into their overall goals, including facilitating searches for artist collaborators, assisting in bridging the gap between goal oriented and process based practice and integrating Artist in Residences or artist spaces into their overall structures.

AWAC is also a Matchmaking Service for Artists looking for activist and organizational support for artworks they have already or are planning to develop. We connect artists with the organizations and activists that have aligning interests and assist in the facilitation of exchange of support and resources in order to bring the artwork to the public. This can range from simple publicity, research sharing and sourcing, to funding of projects. We work to better coordinate artists, especially those working in the genres of intervention and subversion, with organizations that can utilize their actions as part of a campaign, while maintaining individual artistic integrity.
